The rail-shaped alternative is the Midland Main Line to Luton Airport Parkway, then the DART light-rail shuttle to the terminal. That is fine with a backpack.
It is less convenient starting from a Leicester suburb with a family and hold luggage, because you carry bags to the station and change at Luton. A taxi is one vehicle to the terminal. Compare door-to-door for your party rather than headline fares.
Meeting point and vehicle
Luton is a single terminal, so there is no terminal number to get wrong. You still need a clear plan: meet-and-greet in arrivals, or the official pick-up area once you have your bags. The walk from arrivals to the car is not outside the door.
